Purpei the Sometimes-Speaking Cat

I wish I knew how to say what was on my mind.

There are times I try, but more often than not, all I can say is a single word or two. I don’t know what’s wrong. Why can’t I fully talk my thoughts like Daddy and the other Twin-Leggers can?

Daddy is reaching for me again. He stinks more than usual, I find, as he holds me in his arms and showers my fur with kisses. Sometimes I grow tired of his overbearing affection, but I know he means well. He’s the only Protector I know.

Daddy didn’t know where I came from, but then again, neither did I. He’s always told me I was sent from Above to make me feel special, but I knew better. I know the Twin-Leggers came and took me from my place of origin, a place I no longer hold memory of.

There’s a movie with two Twin-Leggers talking on a bench flashing on the TV screen as he brings me to the couch. It’s kind of hurting my eyes, so I have to look away sometimes.

My stomach is starting to rumble, so I part with his lap and head to the litter.

“What’s wrong, Purpy?” He asks me as I’m making my way over. Oh, nothing’s wrong, I’m only trying to go relieve myself after a full dinner. Is that so hard to understand, Daddy? All I can do is make another high-pitched mouthing and hope he understands my thoughts. He only pours me more bitter grub. Great.

I do my duty and head over to the bitter grub amongst his waiting eyes. I slurp some pellets into my mouth, so he doesn’t feel sad about misunderstanding me.

To my delight, he is removing my collar as I eat. The dang thing was beginning to irritate. My tail wags to let him know how pleased I am.

But then, I feel something scratchy wrap around my neck. He put the thicker one on me—the one that brings the fleas. “There ya go, gotcha a clean one!” He says in his usual uppity tone as he picks me up to return to the couch. I wish I knew how to say what was on my mind.
