Faye never quite fit in with her family.
And, not in the way you’d think.
She was born different, in fact, quite different in many ways compared to most girls at her school.
Her legs were unusually long, a sharp contrast with her parents’ short and stubby legs.
There was a strange marking under the right corner of her bottom lip. It was crimson-colored and had the shape of a three-pronged arrow. Faye liked to tell people that it looked like an insignia; though, her parents would always assure her it was a birthmark and quickly change the subject.
One night while Faye was stargazing with her boyfriend in the back of his borrowed truck, her phone buzzed with a message from her mother.
“Faye. Your father and I are proud to have raised such a headstrong and intelligent girl. You’re so grown up now and ready for your life’s next chapter. Remember that we will always love you. No matter what happens.”
Faye smiled anxiously; she would be going off to college in several months.
She continued looking up at the night sky, stricken with the feeling of novalunosis.
Then suddenly, she noticed a glistening red object in the sky that was shaped like a three-pronged arrow moving ever so slowly in their direction.
She looked over at her boyfriend who had seemingly fallen into a petrified yet silent trance. Her eyes snapped back towards the approaching object—now clearly visible as some sort of an aircraft that was extending an all-encompassing ray of red light towards her.
Echoey voices spoke inside her head as she found herself unable to move within the light.
Faye’s heart began to race at the realization of what was happening.
They were taking her with them, and her parents knew about it.
